It was a powerful performance from the forwards in Essendon VFL’s big win over Richmond VFL last Friday.

Big men Shaun McKernan and Sam Grimley combined for a total of 10 goals for the game working well together to cause havoc for the Richmond defenders.

The two moved well to create space often allowing one another to lose their defender and find the easy goal.

McKernan was particularly impressive kicking six goals in the first half before leaving the field with an ankle injury, responding perfectly after being dropped from the senior side.

“I thought Grimmers (Grimley) was fantastic for us and McKernan came back with a really good attitude,” Assistant Coach Harry Corrigan said.

“Both those guys were fantastic.”

Fans will also be pleased to hear that 2016 draftee Mason Redman played the entire game and finshed the day with three goals to his name.

Redman showed promise playing off the half-forward line, imposing himself on the contest and laying several big tackles.

He was able to run freely and did not have any troubles keeping up with the pace of the game.

Speaking following the game, Corrigan praised the overall team efforts believing the hard work done during the week was paramount in the success on the day.

Corrigan particularly highlighted the fast ball movement in transition from the halfback line, which gave forwards the opportunity to get behind the opposition.

“The forwards were able to give us a good opportunity and convert too,” Corrigan said.

“We got run and overlap happening too off the backline and our forwards were able to read their cues really early and get into free space.

“It doesn’t happen every week but it’s something that we try and encourage.”
