It was good news for the Bombers this morning with captain, James Hird, declared a likely starter against Fremantle this Friday night at The Dome. Hird’s injured eye has made rapid improvement in the past few days and provided he gets through training later in the week, he will line up against the Dockers.

""Medical staff have been pleased with how quickly his condition has improved. We would still require final medical clearance before selecting him but at this stage he looks a good chance of playing on the weekend,"" Essendon football manager Dom Cato said.

""Having said that it isn’t something we will take a risk with. It is a delicate injury and we want to be certain he has fully recovered – we certainly won’t risk him doing any further damage. He will train this week and we will monitor his condition but we are confident he will come up.""

IN other injury news out of the weekend, young ruckman Tristan Cartledge will miss the next two weeks after spraining his ankle during the VFL sides win over Coburg at Punt Road yesterday.

Mark Mercuri, who underwent knee surgery last weekend, is not expected to return to football until after the mid-season bye. Ben Haynes, who has failed fitness tests the past two weeks and subsequently been a late withdrawal from the senior side, is expected to play this weekend.
