In 1984, the Essendon Football Club adopted a rallying cry which resonated through the hearts of players and fans alike: Stand Your Ground

This powerful theme emerged in response to the devastating loss suffered against Hawthorn in the 1983 VFL Grand Final, where Essendon was defeated by 83 points.

Under the guidance of coach Kevin Sheedy and fuelled by the determination of the players, Stand Your Ground became more than just a slogan, it became a driving force behind the team's performance.

The resilience and spirit embodied in this mantra powered Essendon's journey throughout the season to claim the 1984 Premiership against Hawthorn – the very team which spurred on the club’s vengeance.
