Essendon ruck Stephanie Wales will stay in red and black for at least another four years after signing a contract extension.

A vital component of the Bombers’ exciting young core, Wales’ development and growth was reflected throughout a strong 2023 season, where she finished third in the club’s Best and Fairest.

Wales said the opportunity to grow within an exciting environment at the NEC Hangar was key in her decision.

“Being a foundation player at Essendon is really special to me and it’s exciting to see what we have built in our first two years. I’m so excited for at least the next four years in the red and black,” Wales said.

“We are in a really good position but, we always want to improve. After watching the finals series last year, I know we can definitely get there and it’s an inspiration to keep pushing and driving the group along.

“I can’t wait to get to work with my teammates for season 2024 and beyond.”

The 20-year-old has developed strongly as the primary ruck in two seasons with the Bombers, appearing in all 21 possible games since her debut against the Hawks at Marvel Stadium in round one of Season Seven.

In her strong 2023 campaign, Wales recorded a career-high 19 disposals in the Bombers’ victory over Fremantle, with her effort recognised as the Round Four Rising Star Nominee.

This was Wales’ second nomination for the Rising Star, with the ruck claiming the award in Round Eight of Season Seven (2023) with 21 hitouts, seven disposals, and seven tackles.

AFLW List and Recruiting Manager Georgia Harvey said the club was excited to see Wales’ development continue over the coming years.

“Steph is an extremely diligent and dedicated player who is constantly committing herself to improving her game, which has been evident over the past two seasons,” Harvey said.

“A highly regarded member of our playing group on and off the field, Steph’s care and commitment to her fellow teammates, combined with her drive and determination makes her an excellent person to have around our program for years to come.

“We are thrilled to have secured Steph’s services for at least the next four seasons and look forward to seeing where she continues to take her football over the coming years. Steph has a bright future ahead of her.”
