Matthew Knights remains confident that his side is building towards a 17th Premiership despite a poor showing against Fremantle on the weekend.
“We’ve got an internal belief that we’re heading down the right track in what we’re trying to achieve and I guess the three quarters against Geelong showed that we are going the right way about it,” Knights said to Bomber.tv.
“The corresponding five quarters haven’t been great but that’s not going to veer us off the vision we’ve got and the attack on the game plan that we think is going to make us successful.”
Knights conceded that his list is currently facing a number of challenges common to developing sides but is confident that with time, they have the ability to produce consistent football at the highest level.
“It’s about us getting better and working closely with the players so that come match day, we can play continuously and a consistent level and do the right things at the right time,” he said.
Knights said while the side’s defensive game plan required some tweaking, he would not back off his commitment to producing exciting, attacking football.
“If you’re going to be successful in this competition there is no question that you have to cover off both when you’ve got the ball and when you haven’t,” he said.
“You need to be at a really high level in both and at the moment we’re not, but we’re continuing on work on that.
“Having said that, we’re not going to let it affect our beliefs and spirit and the way we want to play our footy. I’m not interested in living the past – I’m interested in taking this club to its next Premiership.
“I have strong belief in this playing list and know that they are going to be capable of very good things in the future. It’s one of my philosophies as a coach to always back your players.”
