The Essendon fans liked the little they saw of youngster Darren Walsh in 2003. In his debut season, the 18-year-old played two games and showed signs that he will be an integral member of the Bombers’ mid-field in years to come. The fans commented that Walsh needs to work on improving his strength over the forthcoming pre-season and they believe his speed and polished skills make him an exciting talent and prospect.

Robert Shaw’s thoughts:
Darren played an outstanding game against the Western Bulldogs in Round 4 and had nine possessions on Daniel Giansiracusa. He has exceptional pace and can kick the ball. For those who have seen him play, he needs to put on another 5kg in weight in able to withstand the battering. Darren is exciting and we are happy with his development so far. He faces his second pre-season, which is crucial and he needs to get physically stronger. He has all the ingredients that we will be looking to bring into the side next year.

What some of fan’s had to say:

In the minimal chance that I got to see him play I was impressed definitely someone to watch for the future. Gabby Goss

Didn't see much of the lad but appears to get in and have a go. Will be much easier when he bulks up a bit. Michelle Gardiner

Has had a taste, now the next two seasons are when he needs to make a name for himself. Pace and skill is exactly what the Dons midfield needs, and this is what Darren has. Should be aiming for 10 senior games in 2004. Cameron Jones

I haven’t seen enough of Walsh to give him a great rating but what has been shown he looks to be fast, talented and exciting young player. cant wait to see more of him, he will be a superstar. Dion Gats

A development year for Darren. I liked what I saw. He is very quick and if his last quarter against the bulldogs is any indication he has a huge future. Mark Hosking

Limited senior opportunities, but showed enough speed and class to suggest more senior football in 2004. David Parasol

Darren is developing well and we look forward to seeing this young man develop into another bomber champion. John Poke

Needs to build his upper body strength, but the boy has speed in abundance. very impressive debut against Western Bulldogs, including I think from memory 11 last quarter possessions. I am very much looking forward to seeing Darren in action in 2004 and beyond. Alan Fairbairn

His speed will be important for the club in the future. Hopefully he gets more chances next season but he may need more time playing in the VFL. Rob Tinney
