In exciting news for Bomber fans, Archie Roberts has penned a contract extension to stay in the sash until at least 2028.
Already signed until 2026, the second-year defender has again emphasised his commitment to the Dons’ build by locking in a new deal, continuing to impress those within the four walls and beyond.
Roberts already looked at home when he slotted into the side for a debut late in the 2024 season - earmarking himself as a player to watch in the final month of that year – but his follow-up form this season has made the former pick No.54 a revelation.
The 19-year-old has played every game this season and currently leads all Telstra Rising Star nominees in disposal averages at 24 per game, but the eye test will tell you it’s more than just his ability to accumulate that makes him one of Essendon’s most exciting prospects.
On the way to well and truly establishing himself as a draft steal, Roberts’ composure in traffic and tenacity at the contest has Dons fans already pointing to him as a future leader amongst the squad’s young brigade.
Roberts is thrilled to remain a Don in the long-term.
“I'm loving my footy at the Bombers, it’s been a lot of fun and I’m embracing every opportunity that comes my way,” Roberts said.
"I'm really excited about where the group is at, we're in a great spot and improving every week and I have full belief in the direction we’re heading as a team.
“I've been working closely with the coaches, always looking to improve both on and off the field. That’s something I pride myself on, constantly pushing to be better.
“It’s incredibly special to play in front of our amazing fans, they always show up, especially in the big games. You can really feel their energy, and I can’t wait to continue to run out in front of them for the next couple of years.”
The Club were already chuffed to acquire Roberts as late as they did in that 2023 National Draft, and his subsequent emergence hasn’t surprised those who’ve had a front row seat to his development at the NEC Hangar.
Essendon’s GM – List and Recruiting Matt Rosa attests that the new deal is reward for Roberts’ immediate impact in the space of just two seasons.
“’Robbo’s more than made his mark,” Rosa said.
“We’re thrilled to have him commit again, especially after already signing at the end of last year. He’s all in on what we’re striving for as a Club and has already been a key driver in our culture and the values we stand for.
“We’re super impressed with him both on-field and off, and we’re just as rapt that our supporters will get to see him in our colours heading into the future.”
