Another exciting chapter is being written in Essendon’s long-standing history at Windy Hill, with a $3.2 million redevelopment set to transform the precinct into a modern hub for elite sport, education, and the local community.
The project, a joint commitment between the Essendon Football Club and the AFL, will provide AFLW players and community footballers with elite facilities, ensuring Windy Hill remains the heartbeat of the Moonee Valley region.
Following three years of packed-out AFLW crowds and a renewed energy at the ground, the project focuses on the delivery of state-of-the-art change rooms and modern education spaces that bridge the gap between community football and the elite game.
The result will be a safe, high-performance environment that significantly elevates the club’s AFLW program while serving the broader community. Works commenced in November 2025, and the club is pleased to confirm that Stage 1 is expected to be completed by May 2026. This ensures the new facilities will be fully operational and ready for the first bounce of the 2026 AFLW season.
The Essendon District Football League (EDFL) remains firmly based at the ground, with local players and officials set to benefit directly from the upgrades. These new spaces will be on full display throughout the 2026 EDFL Finals and major blockbuster matches.
While some works are ongoing, the new education wing is already complete and activated. Since the start of the 2026 school year, the Islamic College of Sport has officially called Windy Hill home. Two classes totalling 50 students are now utilizing these modern learning spaces daily, immersing themselves in a professional sporting environment as they pursue their studies.
Broader works are to being developed in consultation with the AFL and key stakeholders/user groups to further support the AFL industry.
