Essendon is pleased to announce that key forward Archie May has signed a two-year extension, tying him to the Bombers until the end of 2028.
Fresh off a solid fortnight of form, the 21-year-old is one of several Mid-Season Draft selections to find a frequent place in the Dons’ starting lineup, tallying 11 games since making his debut in round 14 last year.
Finding his way to the Dons via Subiaco in the WAFL, May’s athleticism, aggression at the contest and ability to cover the ground has made him an exciting option ahead of the ball paired alongside Nate Caddy and a slew of other exciting youngsters in the forward half.
May said he was rapt to continue his journey in the red and black.
“I was absolutely stoked and I’ve loved my time so far, so to lock in a couple more years is incredibly exciting,” May said.
“With the connection, and the belief we are building, and the quality of people at the Club, it was a no-brainer when the contract came through.
“It’s just such an awesome opportunity to be playing with the current group of guys, and to be around the coaches and staff.
“It’s extremely special, wearing the red and black at such a historic Club. Running out in front of the fans is something I don’t take for granted and can’t wait to continue to do this year and beyond.”
May’s first impression to Dons fans came in his brilliant three-goal burst against the SUNS last year, breaking open the contest in the space of just five minutes as a third-gamer.
The weekend’s inspired Gather Round result was as good a showcase yet of May’s improving forward craft, with his late long-range bomb capping off the Club’s return to winning ways.
Having a front row seat to May’s development since helping to identify and secure his services last year, Essendon’s GM – List and Recruiting Matt Rosa said he was excited to see him continue his trajectory into the future.
“Archie has been really impressive with how quickly he’s developed since making his debut in round 14 last year, and this contract extension is a well-deserved reward for all his hard work,” Rosa said.
“The way he’s gone about everything since joining the Club has really stood out to everyone around him - he trains hard and is fully committed to improving every day.
“Our fans should be excited about what he can deliver over the next few years. At just 21 years old, we know his best footy is still ahead of him, which is extremely exciting."
