Star forward Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti has extended his contract with the Bombers for a further three years.

The new deal will see the the 26-year-old don the sash until at least the end of 2022.

McDonald-Tipungwuti relocated from the remote Tiwi Islands to Victoria at just 17 years of age to play for the Gippsland Power before joining Essendon’s VFL side.

While playing in the VFL, McDonald-Tipungwuti worked in the Bombers’ community department before the club drafted him in the 2015 rookie draft.

The electric forward made his debut for Essendon in round one, 2016, quickly becoming a fan favourite among the red and black faithful.

McDonald-Tipungwuti said he was excited to put pen to paper on a contract extension.

“I am really enjoying playing football for this club and I can’t wait to continue my journey with the Bombers,” McDonald-Tipungwuti said.

“I’m thankful to the club and my teammates for the opportunities I’ve had so far, as well as the Essendon fans for their support along the years too. I just want to continue to work hard and play my role to help this group achieve the success that we’re all after over the next few years.”

McDonald-Tipungwuti has kicked 26 goals and averaged four tackles and three marks this season.

General manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said he was delighted McDonald-Tipungwuti had re-signed.

“‘Walla’ has become an integral part of our football club. He is highly regarded within our four walls for his commitment to the group and clearly our supporters love him too,” Dodoro said.

“He works incredibly hard to play his role for the club. Not only does he provide that exciting speed and flair in our forward line, but he constantly wants to improve and challenge himself.

“We are thrilled Walla will remain at The Hangar for at least the next three years, and we are confident his best football is still ahead of him.”

The re-signing of McDonald-Tipungwuti follows Mason Redman, Darcy Parish, Patrick Ambrose, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Sam Draper all recommitting to the Club in 2019.
