Lewis Hayes will remain a Don until at least the end of 2027 after signing a one-year contract extension.

Since joining the Bombers in the 2022 AFL National Draft as pick No.25, the 21-year-old key defender has played one senior game, unfortunately tearing his ACL in his 2025 debut against Sydney after an impressive start down back.

Despite the setback, Hayes has remained determined throughout his rehabilitation, with a return to competitive action firmly in sight in the next fortnight.

Known for his rangy wingspan and aerial ability, Hayes has consistently shown his potential at VFL level, using his intercept marking and competitiveness in one-on-one contests to become a key contributor down back.

A much-loved member of the playing group affectionately nicknamed ‘Pencil’, Hayes has also added significant size to his 199cm frame during his time at the club as he continues to grow both physically and as a footballer.

When asked about his new deal, Hayes said he was grateful for the opportunity to continue his journey in the red and black.

“I’m obviously super excited, it’s such a rich and historic club that I’m so grateful to be a part of. I’m keen to keep building my game and grow as a player in the back end of this season and next year as well,” Hayes said.

“I have loved my time at the club since I got drafted. I’ve made great friendships over the years and feel like as a playing group, we’re all very connected. Everyone has been great in supporting me through my injury and rehab.”

“I’ve only played in front of the Dons army for a short period, but it was unreal when I was out there. They’re the best fans in the league and I have no doubt things will turn for us.”

Essendon GM – List and Recruiting Matt Rosa said the club was excited by Hayes’ future and the resilience he has shown throughout his recovery.

“We’re really excited to get Lewis back out on the park,” Rosa said.

“It was obviously very disappointing for him when he sustained the knee injury in his debut, but the way he has attacked his rehab, along with the positive energy he continues to bring to the group, has us excited about his return to football in the near future.

“We saw in his first half at AFL level, and consistently at VFL level, that he loves to compete and with his athletic traits can play on a variety of opponents".

“The resilience he has built early in his career will hold him in really good stead for the future.”
