Essendon VFL went down to Werribee 18.6 (114) to 27.12 (174) in a high-scoring clash on Sunday afternoon at Windy Hill.
A slow start saw the Dons trailing by 34 points at the first break but a rapid response in the second term held eight majors, getting the home crowd up and about and keeping them in a competitive position.
Werribee hit hard after the main break with six unanswered goals (11 total in the third term) causing an unravelling of the Bombers’ defence.
Inaccuracy in front of the sticks wasn’t a concern, with Essendon securing 10 majors before a behind was put on the board. The goalkicking honours were shared with multiple Dons contributing – Jared Eckersley booted three and Hussien El Achkar slotted two to keep up his consistent form.
Among the VFL listed unit, Solomon McKay (19 disposals, two goals) was lively alongside Jackson Hately and Kristian Ferronato, who each clocked up 24 disposals and two goals to set the tone in the midfield.
Despite the scoreboard deficit, Cam Nyko pressured Werribee with his speed and chase, laying six pivotal tackles to help regain possession and racking up 22 disposals.
Lewis Hayes unfortunately suffered a re-injury of his ACL – the Club will provide a further update once next steps are confirmed with
