Jaxon Artemis’ moment has arrived.

The 19-year-old has been named to make his debut against GWS on Sunday, only seven weeks on from finding out he’d made an AFL list.

Taken at pick No.1 in this year’s Mid-Season Rookie Draft, the dynamic half back has earned his call-up off a flashy 19-disposal performance in last week’s VFL win - one that included a brilliant running goal and demonstrated the excitement he can bring with his leg speed.

Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Artemis found out the news in front of the entire playing group at the NEC Hangar on Thursday, sending teammates around the Club gym into raptures.

Making a smooth start to life as a Don and embracing his new lifestyle at the highest level, Artemis can’t wait to strut his stuff at Marvel Stadium.

"I'm over the moon. I can't wait.

"There are lots of emotions right now. I can't really explain it, but I just can't wait."

A Western Australian Under-18 state representative in 2024, Artemis was awarded WA’s MVP after averaging 15.5 disposals, 3 marks, 5.3 rebound 50s and 78 per cent kicking efficiency across the national carnival, eventually going on to star with Tasmania at VFL level and catch the eye of Bombers recruiters.

While his journey to his debut wasn't linear, it has only made Artemis all the more grateful.

"It's been a special journey. Really rewarding.

"There was obviously a bit of disappointment missing out in my draft year, and then moving away from home to Tasmania at 19. That was pretty tough.

"But to see the rewards now is really fulfilling. I'm just extremely grateful."

Artemis’ debut adds to a special occasion for the Club, again acknowledging its partnership with Challenge for the annual fixture tackling childhood cancer.

This year’s iteration marks the first time in Essendon’s history that the ‘Challenge yellow’ colourway will feature on the player numbers, making the debutant’s No.34 even more prominent for a beautiful cause.

The youngster and his teammates will each walk out onto the ground with a junior mascot, continuing a week of heartwarming activities such as the collaborative creation of this week’s banner.

$5 from every adult ticket purchased this weekend will be donated directly to Challenge. Get behind the cause and show your support - Sunday’s clash gets underway from 4:40pm AEST.
