The Essendon Football Club has today appointed Mark McVeigh as its AFL Senior Coach.
The 232-game Essendon champion returns to the NEC Hangar after nearly 14 years away from the club and more than a decade of elite-level coaching experience since, taking on the top job following an extensive and deliberate search process that considered the best coaching candidates from across the competition.
McVeigh played 14 seasons for the Bombers between 1999 and 2012, serving as vice-captain in his final years. Since retiring, he has built his coaching career at the elite level, most recently as an assistant coach at Sydney, and before that across nine seasons at Greater Western Sydney, including a stint as interim senior coach in 2022, giving him first-hand experience of the demands of the top job.
Essendon President Andrew Welsh said the Board was unanimous and confident in its decision to appoint McVeigh to lead the club's next era.
"We have been extremely clear on the strategy and direction of this football club. We are building the next successful era for Essendon, with a view to playing finals, winning finals and competing for premierships. Mark is the best coach to take us forward to achieve that," Welsh said.
"This industry demands high performance, continual improvement and a relentless drive to get better every day. We went looking for a coach who could establish a clear football identity, develop our people and build a culture that's disciplined and connected from day one.
"Mark was clearly the best candidate for what this role demands. He's developed emerging talent throughout his coaching career, and he connects with younger players in a way that matters for a list at our stage. His game plan is built for the modern game, quick ball movement, adaptable structures, and it's suited to where this competition is heading.
"He's coached at multiple high-performing clubs and played and coached under high-performing coaches, so he knows exactly what it takes to build a winning environment. Everything he presented to us aligned with the strategy this Board has already set. We weighed every candidate against what this role actually demands, and Mark was the clear standout.
McVeigh has signed a three-year contract with the Club, through to the end of the 2029 AFL season.
“From his extensive career and attachment to our Club, Mark understands the passion and loyalty of the members and supporters, as well as the standards that come with representing Essendon,” Welsh added.
“That connection, combined with his experience, gives us great confidence that he is the right person to lead us forward. Alongside our AFLW Senior Coach Natalie Wood, we have great confidence in Natalie and Mark building a connected football environment across the Club.
"We know the last few years have been hard for Essendon people, and we feel that deeply. But I want to be clear: we are not going backwards from here. We have taken the hard path in this process, and we believe it is the right one. This club is resilient, our direction is strong, and I have never been more confident that Essendon's best days are ahead of us. We need to all unite together to ascend back up the AFL ladder.

McVeigh said it was an honour to return to Essendon and welcomed the opportunity to lead the young playing group.
"We're not looking backwards, we're building the next great era of this football club. That's not built on promises. It's built on our standards, our actions and the work we put in every single day.
"There's genuine talent on this list, particularly in the emerging group, but talent alone doesn't get you where you want to go. Our job is high standards, real connection, and total clarity on how we want to play and what it means to pull on the red and black. What excites me is what this group can become together. Our job as coaches is to build an environment that gives them every chance to get there.
"I want us to be brave. Aggressive with the ball, relentless without it, and a defensive system our players trust. When people watch Essendon play, there should be no confusion about what we stand for.
“Pre-season will be demanding. We're establishing our standards from day one, physically, mentally, technically. There'll be a real emphasis on competing hard and building our game model together, so every player knows exactly what's expected of them before a ball is bounced.

The appointment follows a search process led by the coaching selection panel: Andrew Welsh (President); Anthony Di Pietro (Vice President); Ted Richards (Director, Chair of Football Governance Committee); Tim Roberts (Director, Chief Executive Officer); and Caroline Monzon (Executive General Manager, People and Culture).
"On behalf of the Board, I want to thank everyone who put themselves forward for this role. It was a genuinely competitive process and every candidate deserves credit for the work they put into it," Welsh said.
"I also want to acknowledge Dean Solomon. 'Solly' loves the red and black, he always has, and he stepped into this role at short notice and led our players with everything he had. He's the ultimate club man, and we're grateful for what he gave Essendon during that period."
McVeigh will commence at the club immediately, taking part in player exit meetings in the coming days. Up to 18 AFL-listed players will continue to prepare for the VFL Finals series commencing this weekend at Windy Hill.
AFL players are expected to return to pre-season training from Monday, November 9.
