Essendon is proud to announce leader Mason Redman has been nominated as a finalist for the 2026 Tom Hafey Heart of Football Award.
Redman has been recognised for his exceptional community leadership through his longstanding commitment to Challenge and its support of children and families living with cancer.
For the past five years, Redman has gone above and beyond in his platform as an AFL player and role model, building genuine and lasting relationships with Challenge families through regular visits to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
What began through Essendon’s involvement with Challenge quickly became a personal commitment for Redman, who chose to continue visiting families on a regular basis in his own time.
Rather than simply attending hospital visits, Redman has taken the time to understand the individual experiences of children, parents and siblings, developing relationships that have provided encouragement, connection and moments of normality during incredible challenging periods.
Challenge Chief Executive Officer David Rogers OAM praised Redman’s ability to connect with the kids and families of Challenge.
“Mason’s commitment to Challenge and to children and families living with cancer is genuine and unwavering. He does far more than lend his name or profile” Rogers said.
"He believes deeply in what we do, keeps the promises he makes and consistently turns up when families need him. Whether he is bringing happiness to a child or simply listening to a parent going through an incredibly difficult time, Mason gives his time with enormous care, loyalty and generosity.
“What makes Mason so special is the way he connects with children and families. His football profile may open the door, but it is his character that creates the relationship. He is warm, natural and completely present, making every child feel seen and every family feel valued.
"Mason is caring, generous and incredibly kind, and his actions genuinely reflect the heart of football and everything the Tom Hafey Heart of Football Award represents.”
Redman’s commitment has also extended to fundraising and advocacy. In 2024, he shaved his trademark long hair as part of a campaign for Challenge, raising more than $50,000 and generating significant awareness for the organisation and the families it supports.
Reflective of his work with the organisation, the players provided a $10,000 donation to Challenge through the AFL Players’ Association this year.
Redman's ongoing commitment has made a meaningful difference to Challenge families while helping strengthen the organisation’s longstanding partnership with Essendon Football Club.
The winner of the award will be announced during the 2026 Variety Grand Final Lunch on Wednesday, September 23, held in the Palladium at Crown.
