Essendon AFLW captain Bonnie Toogood has reaffirmed her commitment to the red and black, signing a contract extension that will see her remain a Bomber until at least the end of 2029.
A member of Essendon’s inaugural AFLW playing list, Toogood has been a central figure in the development of the program since arriving at the Club.
The key forward has established herself as one of the competition’s leading players during her time at the Bombers, earning All-Australian honours and the Club’s Best and Fairest in a standout 2023 campaign.
Now in her fifth season at Essendon and 10th in the AFLW system, Toogood’s new deal will see her continue to play an important role in the next phase of the Bombers’ growth.
Having helped build the foundations of Essendon’s AFLW program from its inaugural season, Toogood has remained a driving force in shaping the standards and culture of the playing group.
Her influence has extended beyond her on-field performances, with the 28-year-old continuing to embrace the responsibility of helping develop the next generation of Bombers.
AFLW Head of List and Recruiting Josh Moore said Toogood’s recommitment was an important moment for the program.
“Bonnie has been such an important part of our AFLW program from day one, and the way she has embraced the responsibility that comes with being captain has been outstanding. She sets a really strong standard for the group and continues to have a huge impact both on and off the field,” Moore said.
“She’s a genuine leader of this football club and someone who has played a big role in shaping the culture we want to build. Her experience, competitiveness and care for her teammates make her an incredibly valuable part of our program.
“Having Bonnie commit to the Club through to 2029 is a great result for Essendon. She’s entering an important stage of her career and we’re really excited to have her leading this group as we continue to grow and build towards sustained success.”
Already an AFLW premiership player, All-Australian and Essendon Best and Fairest winner, Toogood will be looking to build on her already very impressive resume.
