Essendon Football Club is pleased to announce defence duo Matilda Dyke and Alexandra Morcom have both signed one-year contract extensions, keeping them in the red and black until at least the end of 2027.
The pair have become important contributors in the Bombers' backline, offering versatility, experience and composure as part of the defensive unit.
Morcom has enjoyed some of the best football of her career this season, continuing to provide a strong presence in one-on-one contests while also taking on different roles when required.
A Bomber since 2018, Morcom's versatility has been a key feature of her game, with the 29-year-old capable of playing across half-back and taking on run-with roles through the midfield. She has also been recognised internally, earning the Players' Player award in 2023, Most Courageous honours in 2024 and this season she was nominated into the emerging leadership group by her teammates.
Dyke joined the Dons in 2023 after making the move from the WAFLW and has continued to grow her impact across the backline.
Now with 33 AFLW games to her name, the 23-year-old has shown her ability to play a number of roles, including as a key defender, while her athleticism and willingness to take on different challenges have made her a valuable member of the squad.
AFLW Head of List and Recruiting Josh Moore said retaining the defensive duo was an important step for the Bombers as they continue to build their list.
“Alex and Matilda have both shown how valuable they are to our backline, but what stands out is their ability to adapt and do whatever the team needs,” Moore said.
“Alex brings a wealth of experience and leadership, while Matilda continues to grow her game and has shown a real willingness to take on different roles.
"Having both of them committed through to the end of 2027 gives us some great stability in our defence, and we’re excited to see what they can produce in the seasons ahead.”
