Rapidly improving young Bomber Mark McVeigh will undergo ankle surgery tonight to remove a piece of floating cartilage from the joint. As a result McVeigh will be on a modified training program for the next four weeks. Persistent soreness in the joint and a subsequent MRI scan revealed the floating cartilage and necessitated the arthroscopy.

""It is just a clean up more than anything and certainly not a major setback. I would expect he would be available for selection for our pre-season match against Fremantle,"" Essendon football manager Dominic Cato said.

McVeigh, 22, played every game for Essendon last season after finding his niche deep in defence. It was a critical move for the team with McVeigh's success down back releasing Mark Johnson to the midfield.
