It’s time for the VFL side to make its move according to Coach Paul Corrigan.

The Bombers have won three of their last five games, with the biggest losing margin just six points.

The side is seventh on the ladder with this week’s opponent Northern Blues nipping at their heels in eighth position.

Much like the AFL season, the VFL competition is extremely tight with each weekend’s result triggering significant fluctuations on the ladder.

Corrigan said banking some wins in the coming weeks is crucial for the side to cement their spot in the top eight.

“The way we’ve been playing over the previous weeks has been really good. I think now we just have to build on that consistency and make sure we can get a few wins on the board,” he said.

“We have set ourselves up now, so our destiny is in our own hands at the moment.

“Every game each week is really important because the competition is so tight. There is movement in the ladder each week with wins and losses.

“We just have to go out there on Saturday, play some really good football and hopefully that takes care of the win for us and we can keep consolidating ourselves in that eight.

“We know ourselves that we just have to play our brand of footy.

“We know sides are going to come with their brand of footy but hopefully we can sustain our effort for a bit longer and keep ourselves in games and hopefully win.”

Essendon VFL will have a “wealth of experience” on the field when they take on the Blues at Windy Hill on Saturday.

The side will boast 16 AFL listed players with Matthew Leuenberger, Matt Dea, Josh Begley and Kyle Langford just a few of the handy inclusions.

“We want to see all of them playing at AFL level but to get that calibre of players back into our VFL game on Saturday is great,” Corrigan said.

“Hopefully they can come in and play the way we want them to play within the team but have a real impact.

“We have a pretty strong side in this week.”

The Northern Blues won six games in a row at the beginning of the season but slid down the ladder after losing their last four matches.

Regardless of their recent form, Corrigan said the Dons will have to perform at their best to get on top of the Blues.

“They started the year really well so they’ve been in really good form,” he said.

“They’ve played some pretty good sides in the last month and they’ve been close in games.

“I expect another really good contested game.

“They are really good on the outside – they like to control the ball so we have to make sure that our pressure on Saturday is there and make sure that we look after the contest.

“Hopefully we can use the ball really well, get some good looks going inside 50 and reward ourselves on the scoreboard.”

The round 11 clash will be televised on Channel 7 from 2pm.
