The term ‘utility’ is back in vogue across the AFL as clubs look for multi-dimensional players to provide extra flexibility on match day.

Michael Hurley, Cale Hooker and Brendon Goddard are capable of fulfilling such a role and the Bombers may have added to their collection at last week’s National Draft.

Throughout his under age and SANFL career, Mason Redman has been used in a variety of positions.

“Mason certainly has those attributes that allows him to play multiple roles,” Glenelg Coach Matt Lokan said.

“He has the ability to play through the middle of the ground, half-back and even half-forward.

“That’s his real strength.”

State coaches cashed in on Redman’s flexibility throughout the National Championships.

He was predominantly used across the half-back line, but kicked three goals when swung forward against Vic Metro.

Redman’s natural attack on the ball, aggressive nature around the contest  and ability to break the lines are three key elements that saw him selected in the top 30 last week.

“Mason is probably a metres gained player and really likes to run and carry a lot,” Lokan said.

“I think with today’s footy you have to be able to adapt to a variety of roles and I can see Mason playing that swing role between half-forward and half-back.

“Once he develops his body a little, he might be able to go inside more.”
