Essendon players today joined Australian cricket stars Brett Lee and Adam Gilchrist to give 11-year old child cancer survivor Nicolas Lopez the Christmas present of a lifetime by playing a game of indoor cricket with him and some friends at Windy Hill.
Nicolas was nominated by The Cancer Council Victoria to play in the 3
“Nicolas was looking forward to this cricket game but, since it didn’t go ahead, we wanted him to still have a fun hit with Essendon footballers and Australian cricketers. He is a brave young man and we hope today leaves him with some happy lasting memories,” Scott Lucas said.
“The Essendon players were also looking forward to matching their cricket talents against some of the best players in the world so it’s fun to roll the roll over with them today.”
Since naming the Cancer Council as their preferred charity in 2006, the Essendon Football Club community has become passionate supporters of the fight against cancer.
In just the last twelve months Essendon has played in the Clash for Cancer, worked with the Cancer Council to launch the community football men’s cancer fundraiser Call to Arms, and hosted Moonee Valley Relay For Life.
The Bombers are now gearing up for their second Moonee Valley Relay For Life event, which will be held at Windy Hill from 6pm Friday 8 February 2008 to 6pm the next day. Teams of ten or more will take turns to keep a baton moving around the footy field for the duration of the overnight event to raise funds.
The Bombers players will be forming a team for the event and are planning fundraising. It’s hoped the 2008 event will raise more than $225,000 so if anyone is looking for a way to support a mate facing cancer, why not register a team today?
