Kevin, Brisbane were very good on the weekend?
""They are a terrific side and when you take on a coaching job you don't have the right to think you are going to win every week. They are a really good side and we have a lot of work to do and that starts with Adelaide this Friday night. Brisbane are on top and we are doing the chasing.""
Kevin, you have some concerns about the draft concessions being made for some interstate sides?
""A lot of people here in Melbourne put a lot into football - they really love the game. And it is not only the ten Melbourne clubs - we have two teams in Perth and two in Adelaide - that is 14 clubs who have to convince the AFL (that Brisbane and Sydney don't require further draft concessions). Gee whiz Brisbane have got a pretty good side - they might struggle to get the concessions through but you never know what the commission will do - they run the game. Many years ago we gave up our under 19s based on an uncompromised draft and trade period - I don't think we have ever had one.""
Do you think player wages should be frozen?
""I would be happy to see coaches and player payments stay about the same for a little while. Not knowing the in and outs of all the payments - I think the fans would like to feel that the coaches, including myself, and players aren't being greedy so I think it should stay about the same for a little while.""
How was Dean Rioli's return to football?
""He played a reasonable game against the Northern Knights in the VFL on the weekend. I'm going out to have tea with him tonight and see how he is feeling and his thoughts about his first game back. He might be another week away but I will talk to him and we can take it from there.""
And finally Kevin, the AFL presented you with a gift to honor your 500th game as coach?
""It was really pleasing and it was one of the few times I have been into the AFL and been able to smile and have a bit of fun with many of the people who I have spoken and written about. I told them it was lovely to be welcomed into the spaceship and be welcomed by all the martians - that is how Wayne Jackson introduced myself. Wayne and the AFL gave my wife Geraldine and the family a wonderful present for my 500th game. I spoke about a few of the issues of the day with Ron Evans, Bill Kelty and Andrew Demetriou.""
