In the 2008 August edition of the Bomber magazine, Sam Lonergan talked about his admiration for veteran on-baller Jason Johnson. Lonergan will now have an ever-present reminder of what Johnson has meant to himself and the Club, with the 21-year-old to wear the number 14 guernsey from this season onwards.

Lonergan’s number change was one of a few adjustments made to playing guernseys for next year. 2008 draftee David Zaharakis will wear the number 11 guernsey previously worn by Damien Peverill. It is a number David has worn most of his junior career.

Essendon’s number one draft selection at the 2008 draft, Michael Hurley, will wear number 22. Michael Still will wear number 35 and Tyson Slattery will wear 36. Irish recruit, Michael Quinn will wear number 41

Lonergan was thrilled to be given the opportunity to wear the number 14 guernsey, worn by two-time Crichton Medallist Jason Johnson during his 184-game career.

“From my point of view, as soon as the opportunity came up I jumped at it,” Lonergan said. “It really means a lot to me, particularly having played alongside Jason. He is someone I have great respect for and get along with really well. If I can be half as good a player as Jason was for this Club I will have done the number justice.

“I don’t feel any real pressure because I know Jason supported the decision and has always been a great help to me. He rang me straight away and said I only needed to pick up the phone if I wanted to talk football with him. He is a champion of this Club and I will do everything I can to carry on the tradition.”

The way Lonergan goes about his football is similar of Jason Johnson – a hard, in and under, goal-kicking midfielder. Like Johnson, Lonergan is also very dedicated to getting the most out of his ability.

The guernsey number changes are:

Brent Prismall – 9
David Zaharakis – 11
Michael Hurley – 22
Michael Still - 35
Tyson Slattery – 36
Michael Quinn - 41
