The ANZAC Day thriller between Essendon and Collingwood yesterday set a new record as the most-watched AFL home and away match on television since the current ratings system began in 2001.

Wednesday afternoon’s match at the MCG drew a total average audience of 1.726 million viewers in the OzTam ratings nationally, eclipsing the previous record of 1.643 million from the 2006 ANZAC Day match.

The figures also have the match as the highest rating match for the 2012 season to date.

AFL Acting General Manager Broadcasting, Scheduling and Legal Affairs Simon Lethlean said

“The ANZAC Day match is a highlight on the AFL calendar and Essendon and Collingwood produced a showcase game worthy of the very best in our sport.”

“Audience numbers across the game, throughout the nation, were quite outstanding and deservedly reflected the standard of football produced by the two clubs.”

ANZAC day national average audiences in recent years are as follows:
2006 – 1,643,439
2007 – 1,571,089
2008 – 1,501,145
