2002: At the commencement of 2002, Bannister looked to have found his feet at AFL level – at the finish he was on crutches. After playing four senior games in his first season with the club, much was expected of Bannister in 2002. But he managed just five games and his season ended abruptly when he severely injured his ankle in a VFL game. It was a sour end to a season that never really gathered any momentum. His handful of senior games saw him spend a lot of time on the bench but Essendon fans saw glimpses of his talent when he was given ground time.

Strengths: Bannister has an excellent attitude and despite things not going to plan in 2002 he has put his head down and has done an excellent 2003 pre-season. His running ability will be the key to him having an impact at senior level. He moves very well and just needs to ensure he runs to the right places. Bannister is also a very good mark for his size.

Position: Looks to be a winger / half forward where his speed and marking can be used to good effect. He has spent a lot of the pre-season in the gymnasium and built-up significantly – some Essendon supporters may not recognise him! This will ensure he isn’t easily pushed aside at stoppages and will make him a more effective midfielder.

2003: Bannister will be very keen to have an impact during the pre-season games and to put the misfortune of 2002 behind him. He is an undoubted talent who has a feel for the game and he still looks to be a long-term prospect at senior level. But that said, he won’t want to waste a moment in 2003. The turnover of players has created opportunity and he must ensure he is at the front of the line when it comes to picking the Essendon side for Round 1.

Sheedy says: Jordan has added seven kilograms to his frame and is looking strong. It is an interesting time for him, learning to adjust his athleticism to his newly acquired bulk. It will be exciting to follow his progress as he must seize the moment and opportunities he gets, particularly now that three similar type players have been traded.
