Essendon Football Club has today revealed the first two elements featured on the club’s 140 year commemorative guernsey to be worn against Carlton on Friday night.

Over the next two days the club will reveal key elements of the guernsey before the full reveal of the design on Wednesday.

The design incorporates a number of elements from the club's rich history whilst maintaining the fundamental colours and design of the Bombers home guernsey; a black base and synonymous red sash.

The guernsey will feature a special 140 year logo celebrating the club’s proud history since its first game in 1873.

The club was thought to have formed in 1872 with the first match against Carlton played the following year on June 7 against Carlton which Essendon won by a goal.

Also featured on the collar of the guernsey is the club’s first ever used logo.

The logo has been found in correspondence in 1886 from the secretary to player Charles ‘Commotion’ Pearson.

This is the earliest piece of club correspondence held by the club and is thought to be the earliest emblem.
