Essendon may still be without defender Sean Wellman for the opening match of the season but MRI scans this afternoon gave the club's medical staff reason to smile. There were concerns that Wellman may have fractured a bone in his foot but scans cleared him of serious injury. The mid-foot sprain is likely to sideline Wellman for the next three to four weeks.

Wellman was forced from the ground in last Saturday night's Wizard Cup semi-final against St Kilda. Post-match the left foot was heavily strapped and he was on crutches.Had today's can revealed a broken bone in the foot, Wellman could have been sidelined for up to 10 weeks.
