Coburg and Essendon have been champions in their own Leagues ever since Australian Rules Football began. Essendon won the first VFL Premiership in 1898 and Coburg won three VFA Premierships in a row from 1926 - 1928 upon entering the VFA in 1925. For years the communities of the now named Moreland and Moonee Valley municipalities have had the pleasure of being able to follow both these champion teams at the same time. Essendon in the AFL and Coburg in the VFA.

Many fans will remember cheering on their beloved Essendon Bombers on Saturdays in the outer at Windy Hill and to follow that on Sunday at the Coburg City Oval by watching Coburg (the ""Sunday Bombers"") do battle in the VFA. A new era has dawned with the advent of the restructured Victorian Football League and the two teams are now able to do battle on the same field in the same League.

Essendon played Coburg in Round 1 of this season in a highly entertaining encounter that saw Coburg run away with the game in the last 10 minutes. The return game will be played this Saturday July 27th at Windy Hill. Make sure you come along and support the Essendon VFL side in this must win match. Essendon members can get into the game for free on presentation of their membership card.

Essendon has not won the Moreland-Moonee Valley Cup yet and playing on our own turf may be the spur that we need to wrest the cup from the Coburg Tigers. Come and help celebrate this exciting day as once again the two teams challenge one another and continue to build a tribal rivalry previously unknown to the North West and to the supporters of these two Champion Clubs!
