In just one encounter James Hird has let off warning signs that he will be a key contributor again this season. The skipper is in great physical shape for the forthcoming season and so are some of his teammates. ""I think Jason Johnson has probably had one of the best preseasons I have ever seen by a player at this football club and if he doesn't have one of the best years he has ever had I'd be surprised,"" Hird said.

Matthew Lloyd has also recorded one of his best pre-seasons at the club and is another player Hird is predicting to have a big season. ""He is a champion as it is and he looks like he has got better as well so if he has got better that's scary for every defender in the competition and great for us,"" Hird said.

""Scott Lucas looks very good as well and you look at a young player in Kepler Bradley who has impressed on the track too,"" he said. Hird is positive about the team’s chances heading into the season after the majority of the squad has had impressive pre-seasons. However, the 31-year-old has not even mentioned the word premierships to his troops.

""Premierships - it is very dangerous to start talking about. I would never talk to these players about a premiership. You don't talk about it until you are actually in the grand final and what can happen,"" he said. ""So you want to talk about being successful in the year and have a successful year and hopefully win enough games to get into the finals rather than talking about whether premierships will come. A lot of coaches and players have been stung by talking about premierships even in the past week I think.""
