Training has got slightly easier for Brent Stanton since first arriving at the club last November. The former Northern Knights player spent the first week of his AFL career at Cann River on a training camp. Vice captain Matthew Lloyd said that the Cann River experience was the toughest training he has done in his 10 years at the club. So for Stanton and the other three draftees – Ricky Dyson, Kepler Bradley and Jay Nash – it was a challenging initiation.

The Cann River training camp must have been a good platform for Stanton because he has gone from strength to strength since then. He played every pre-season match and then debuted in Round 1 against Port Adelaide. The 18-year-old has played 11 games this season and was rewarded today with a National Rising Star nomination.

Recruitment manager Adrian Dodoro said that Stanton is a dedicated young player and has worked hard on the track and in the gym since being drafted. ""From day one when he arrived at the club, I think everyone was very impressed with the way he attacked his pre-season. For a 17-year-old kid to be in the top bracket for endurance and speed, it was outstanding,"" Dodoro said.

""He thoroughly deserves his nomination. He has worked very hard in his first year, drafted as a 17-year-old. The future looks very bright for him.""

Dodoro said that Stanton was pleased to receive the nomination, but his focus is firmly on playing Sydney this Saturday night. ""He is one of those kids that is a very determined young man and has a good head on his shoulders. He is not getting too carried away with the nomination.

""He is a very intense and has bigger fish to fry than this nomination – that is how he looks at his footy. At the moment, he just wants to cement his spot and establish himself in the senior team. His whole focus now is playing finals football, which is fantastic,"" Dodoro said.
