Damian Cupido is set for a baptism of fire when he plays his first game for Essendon this Saturday night. Cupido comes up against his old side Brisbane and they aren’t exactly known for rolling out the red carpet for anyone, let alone a past player. Sheedy says the football world knows Cupido has the talent and that now is the time for him to produce the goods at AFL level.

“Of course he is going to be under some pressure playing against his old team – so is Blake Caracella,” Sheedy said. “He has settled in very well. He has enjoyed shifting back to Melbourne and playing for the team he barracked for as a kid. He idolised Michael Long and we gave him Michael Long’s jumper so we will see if he can live up to that,” Sheedy said prior to training this afternoon.

“He is very quick – as quick as any of them over a short distance. He has got some talent there, he just has to make sure that his football knowledge compliments his skills and that he plays football the way we need him to.

Sheedy said it would have been very hard for Brisbane to get a real gauge on just what Cupido had to offer their side.

“He didn’t play that much in Brisbane. To be very fair to Brisbane he spent a lot of time on the sidelines – he had two shoulder operations. He kicked a bag or two of goals for them and I don’t want to change that too much. He has got the potential and ability – he will be a much better player when he gets some games under his belt – at the moment he hasn’t even played 15,” Sheedy said.
