Essendon paceman Jason Winderlich has been declared as a chance to return this weekend for the first time since he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament early last year.

General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said the 27-year-old would undergo fitness tests during the course of the week to determine his availability.

“Jason is a good chance to return this week so we look forward to hopefully having him back,” Hamilton said.

“It’s another important game for the club and it is our first home game, so we’re really looking forward to seeing as many members and supporters there as possible.”

Hamilton said Heath Hocking, Kyle Hardingham and Cale Hooker were all a chance to be available for selection this week, following the trio’s injury concerns on Saturday during the Bombers’ two-point victory over North Melbourne.

“Heath is sore, although it is too early to make a call right now on how he will be,” Hamilton said.

“We will obviously do extensive concussion testing on him and we’ll be hopeful that he will be right for the weekend, but it really is a wait and see process.

“The good news for Kyle following his injury is that it is not a structural concern.

“It is more of a bruising situation which is ultimately good news, but his availability for the weekend will depend on his mobility and strength.

“Cale has hurt his ankle and we are waiting for the swelling to go down to determine his availability. While he has given himself every chance to be available for the weekend, it is probably a bit too early to tell.

“At this stage however, all three players are chance to play this week, so we’ll wait and see,” Hamilton said.

Young-gun Travis Colyer is remaining in positive spirits, following the news that he would miss the next six weeks with a broken thumb.

“It really is very disappointing for Trav because he would have played Round 1 as he has had a very impressive pre-season,” Hamilton said.

“He has had his operation and is positive because he can maintain his running so he won’t lose that fitness aspect.”
