Essendon vice captain Joe Misiti has agreed to a new one-year contract with the club. Misiti, who turns 29 next month, played 21 of the Bombers' 24 games last season - averaging 17 possessions, despite spending more time than usual on the bench. He was second for the Bombers in terms of loose ball gets (88), third in handballs (160) and third in ruck duel clearances (72). ""It is great to get this out of the way and I can now look forward to preparing for 2004,"" Misiti said this afternoon.

""I still think I have got a lot of football left in me. A few people were speculating about my future at the end of the season so I suppose I have a point to prove to some,"" Misiti said.

Essendon assistant coach Robert Shaw said Misiti has been loyal and understanding servant of the Bombers. ""I would guess he isn't on the same money as previous years but then that is Joe Misiti for you,"" Shaw said. ""This club's long history has been built on blokes like Joe. I literally don't think you can buy that sort of quality in a person.

""I think we learned something from the Grand Final despite not being there - old heads and hard bodies are invaluable when the pressure is on. If Joe can build on his excellent game on Peter Bell in the Elimination Final - he will have a real impact this season.""

Shaw said Misiti was still one of the best stoppage players in the competition and that he would benefit from the addition of Matthew Allan, who has been recruited as a back up to young ruckman David Hille.

""With Steven Alessio and Paul Barnard retiring - and given their on-field and particularly off-field character - I think it was very important we held on to Joe,"" Shaw said.

IN other contract news, Essendon has signed a two-year deal with Ben Haynes and he will be named on the Bombers' primary list being submitted to the AFL at the end of this week.
