Sam Hunt did not make a senior appearance in 2003 after debuting in the previous season and playing three games. After showing great potential in 2002, the Essendon fans were surprised not to see more of Hunt this season. The fans believe the 20-year-old has the physique and skill required to make it at the top level and 2004 is a make or break year for the former Geelong Falcons player. Hunt received a ranking of 3.2/10 from the fans.

Robert Shaw’s thoughts:
Sam Hunt is similar to a number of young players that have had a taste of senior footy and now the ball is firmly in his court. The level of dedication both on and off the field, sacrifice, commitment and hunger that separate potential from actually going on with it. Sam has pace and he is a long kick and is six foot four and a talented footballer. He is still in the infancy of his career and has reached a fork in the road and depending on what he is prepared to dedicate himself to do to make it as a league player is up to him. Certainly the groundwork is there.

What some of fan’s had to say:
Disappointing considering he made his debut in 2002 and looked to be a good player. Played well in reserves but has to take that next step in 2004. Steve McNaught

Haven't seen him in action. 2004 will probably be his make or break year. If he could play full back, then that could release Fletcher to another spot. David Street

After playing well at the end of last year it looked like he was going to get a spot in our backline. Still has the skills to get in the side and needs to do it next year. Tara Murray

After a few seasons with the Essendon Footy Club, we still haven't heard all that much about Sam Hunt. I suppose injuries did have a slight toll on his impact in 2003, but hopefully for him and the EFC he can develop into a more mature footballer in 2004. Samuel Wharton

Showed potential in 2002 but 2003 was a forgettable year. Has the ability to become a top player but needs to really dedicate himself to have a great pre season. If he does, could become a dangerous player in 2004 and beyond. Andrew Leung

Surprised not to see him play senior games this season after playing the year before. Hopefully he comes on next season and fills a hole that Danny Jacobs has left. Dan Lennon

After failing to play a senior game this year is surely on his last chance next year. Will have to make it a huge one as he hasn't really made an impression in his time at the club. Shane King

Has been at the club a while now, and is probably on his last chance to step up into the big time. Has shown he has the skills, but now needs to show he has the application. Michael Wyres
