General Manager Football Operations Paul Hamilton said the players performed well in their first competitive game for the year.
“This was really just a more formalised progression of the competitive training we’ve been building towards,” Hamilton said.
“It allowed the coaches to get out onto the ground and talk to the players during the game as well which was extremely beneficial.”
Importantly, Hamilton said the players got through the match unscathed.
“We had a couple of knocks and bruises but it was nothing serious and that is one of the things you hold your breath on this early in the season” Hamilton said.
“We were really happy with the way it went and thankfully there were no injuries.”
The match also provided an opportunity for the coaches to assess how the players had adapted to the new training regime.
“It was great to see the players showing signs of producing the type of football we want them to play” Hamilton said.
“No doubt there is still some work to do and that is expected, but there really was some strong signs the players understand the way the coaches want them to play”
“It was also good to see the first year players in a match situation and most of the guys had a really good hit out so we’re pretty happy with the overall performances.”
