The ‘Fletcher’ end will become a permanent fixture for every Essendon home game at Etihad Stadium, replacing the Lockett end.
Fletcher, who turns 36 today, has played 333 games in 19 seasons for Essendon since being drafted to the club in 1992 via a father/son selection.
“He’s an amazing player with a natural athletic ability who I would rate as one of the greatest players in the game,” Coach James Hird said.
Fletcher said he was overwhelmed by the acknowledgement.
“It’s an amazing honour to see the family’s name recognised at the ground. I’ve spent more than half my life at the club – it’s a place that I love being involved with - for all the opportunities and the friendships and what it means to so many people,” Fletcher said.
“Dad obviously has played for the Bombers, I’m still enjoying my time here and hopefully Mason and Max will get their own opportunity in the red and black one day.”
There were more than 10,000 entries in a public vote on the club’s website – essendonfc.com.au - with Fletcher the overwhelming favourite against Essendon greats Dick Reynolds, Bill Hutchison and Terry Daniher.
Well respected by the Essendon faithful and wider football fraternity, Fletcher is also a much loved member of the club’s playing group. In celebration of his 36th birthday, the playing group recorded a special birthday song and have also shared their thoughts on him.
