Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy expects a crowd of 60,000 to head to the MCG to watch Essendon and the Kangaroos “go to war”. Sheedy is predicting a fierce battle between two clubs that have developed an enormous modern-day rivalry. “We are just neighboring clubs that have never had a great feeling for one another on the field. It happened well before I ever got to Essendon but it will continue tomorrow night,” Sheedy said.

“We would love to have got there in 1996 and 1999 and the Kangaroos have got the premierships that we wanted – we feel very envious about that. I think that in many ways it helped our clubs grow up a bit, to get real about football and I we have to thank the Kangaroos for that,” he said.

“As far as I am concerned these two clubs have never been in love with one another and we are heading off to a nice old physical battle this Friday night. That is what is going to happen – it’s no good sitting up there kidding ourselves.”

Sheedy was asked about the recent comments from Essendon chairman Graeme McMahon about the Kangaroos struggle for survival.

“Sometimes when you are asked so many questions in public you are eventually going to say something that won’t please some people. I made the same mistake with the Brownlow Medal – in hindsight I should have said that everyone who won a Brownlow Medal deserved it but I think there is a better way to go about deciding it. Graeme McMahon might look back and think possibly he should have made that comment but that is for him to say, not me,” Sheedy said.
