Essendon will appeal the two-match suspension handed out to Dustin Fletcher at the AFL tribunal last night. Fletcher was found guilty of misconduct in that he made unnecessary and unreasonable contact to the leg of West Coast's Chris Judd. If the decision isn't overturned, Fletcher will only play again this season if Essendon wins its next two finals and makes the Grand Final. The appeal will be heard tomorrow night.
Despite missing the Elimination final against the West Coast Eagles, James Hird is only three points away from leading the TAG Heuer Player of the Year competition. The Bombers skipper is in second place on 44 points behind ladder leader Jason Johnson. Johnson has continued his 2001 best and fairest winning form, with another solid season in the mid-field. The 24-year-old is leading the Bombers kicks and tackles for the season, 309 and 82 respectively. However, the question on everyone's lips is - ""can he fight off the late challenge from James Hird to win the TAG Heuer Player of the Year competition?""
