Essendon Football Club’s commitment to fostering social cohesion through sport continued yesterday, as the preliminary round of the 2011 Unity Cup took place at the Airport West Football Club between a number of multicultural communities.

Only five points could separate the first game of the day, which saw the newly created Indigenous team go down to Flemington, in what proved to be a close and hard fought contest.

In Group A, AJAX outclassed ICV Doncaster with a 12-goal victory but failed to produce the same result against IISNA, going down by 31 points. IISNA were the team to beat in Group A, securing a Grand Final berth on the back of comfortable wins against ICV Doncaster and AJAX.

In Group B, Flemington recorded a convincing 83-point win over Newport. The Indigenous team couldn’t back up their strong performance against Flemington going down to Newport in what became a particularly one-sided affair.

Following Sunday’s matches, the teams have now been ranked and will play off this Sunday April 10 at Windy Hill in the Unity Cup Finals.

The Indigenous team will play ICV Doncaster to decided a fifth and sixth place, AJAX and Flemington will decide the third and fourth placing and IISNA will host Newport in the anticipated Grand Final.

The Unity Cup Finals will incorporate a family day including a variety of activities such as Police MFB and SES expo’s, player autographs, an Auskick session, a kids activity area, and a number of women’s activities.

Brought to you by Australian Federal Police and the Essendon, North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs Football Clubs and proudly supported by Malka Training Consulting, Kangan Institute, the Unity Cup aims to bring together Melbourne’s diverse multicultural society through Australian Rules Football.
