Essendon is happy to have received some form of compensation for Angus Monfries despite the 25-year-old being a restricted free agent.
Monfries was traded to Port Adelaide for pick 48 in the first deal completed on the opening day of the trade period.
List manager Adrian Dodoro said the Bombers dealings with Port Adelaide initiated a positive result for both clubs.
“Given the situation with Brendon Goddard coming in the door it gives us some compensation given the way the free agency formula is set up by the AFL,” Dodoro said.
“We are unhappy to lose him but definitely happy to get some compensation.”
Dodoro said the club believed it put a significant offer to keep Monfries at the Bombers.
“We had a two year deal on the table but he chose a four year deal at Port Adelaide.”
“Port Adelaide were terrific in that they made their intentions very clear early on in the piece so there was no point mucking around we just got it done.”
Under the free agency guidelines a club will only receive compensation for losing a free agent should they have a net loss of players throughout the free agency period.
