Under the new training program, Johns can walk, swim, ride, and do weights and boxing to keep fit. He just can’t do any running because of the impact involved and also can’t kick the football.
The most frustrating thing for Johns is that he is not in any pain of discomfort, so he feels like he wants to run. ""I know that if I do run it is just a risk. Because I feel good I just have to keep reminding myself that it will set me backwards if I run,"" he said.
Running has caused the cartilage to chip away from the hip bone in recent years and resulted in Johns having surgery two times. ""Your body weight just increases so much when you run. So with no running, hopefully it will heal by itself.""
Johns was elevated to the senior list at the end of last year after one season as a rookie. His contract expires at the end of 2004, but he is hopeful the club will keep him on the list despite his injury concerns.
""It is only a one year contract this year, but hopefully I stay on in some way next year. I will probably miss all of next season as well. If I want to play footy again then it is going to take time for me, so that is the way I have to do it.""
The continual injury set-backs have made Johns more determined to return to playing. ""I have never thought about giving up – not a chance! The injury does make me more determined but it is also very frustrating because you can’t play footy and can’t train.
""In a way it also makes you stronger because to play footy again I have to go through this process. I just have to keep following orders and just doing the rehabilitation,"" Johns said.
""My motto has always been – ‘live your life and not die wondering’. This is what I am doing. I know I am doing it the hard way, but I think if I keep at it, good things will come my way.""
