ESSENDON is hopeful the Victorian Government will provide funding in the future for its Melbourne Airport training centre, despite Tuesday's announcement that the Bombers had been overlooked in the State Budget.

Essendon has already raised more than $18 million of the required $25 million for their state-of-the-art facility, but had made a submission for up to $5 million from the state government.

Chairman David Evans was made aware the club had failed in its bid at lunchtime on Monday when he spoke to Sports Minister Hugh Delahunty, a former Essendon player.

Evans said the government had not shut down the possibility of funding in the future.

"That was certainly something that I asked the Sports Minister yesterday and he welcomed us going to the state government with another submission for the next budget," Evans said on Wednesday.

"That's something we'll do because we really believe in this project. We've put a lot of time and effort into talking to the state government about it and investing in it, and we think it has great community outcomes.

"So we're pretty keen for the state government to support us."

Evans said the club would need to continue its fundraising efforts.

"We are disappointed but it's something we accept and we move on," he said.

"It will make us have to work that much harder to talk to our high net-worth benefactors and members about buying in and investing in this dream of ours."

Evans declared on Tuesday that his family would contribute more money to the project in light of the government's call.

Although he did not want to disclose the amount, Evans said it was something he felt obliged to do.

"I don't feel I can go and talk to our members and our private benefactors if we're not seriously committing to the project ourselves," he said.

"I think that's only fair. That way people who I'm talking to about contributing will feel that we're in it as well and that's important."
