The Essendon fans found it difficult to comment on Jason Laycock’s debut season considering he didn’t make a senior appearance. What they saw of him in the 2003 Wizard Cup impressed them and many fans commented that he showed good potential and with further development, particularly in the strength department, he should be a good long-term prospect for the club. Laycock received a ranking of 3.8/10 from the Essendon fans.

Robert Shaw’s thoughts:
He is an exciting talent, who is only 18. He is six foot six and he takes a big mark. He was dogged by a few lower leg injuries, which a few younger players get. We couldn't put the hours into him on the track and that is probably one of the reasons why Sheeds didn't play him - we would have loved to play him. He will benefit from another year of pre-season and physical development and we are looking forward to seeing him out there in the Wizard Cup.

What some of fan’s had to say:
Can't make a comment at this stage. Don't know enough about him. The fact that he was our first pick in the 2003 National Draft should mean that he has a future at the Club though. Margaret Low

Word is he and the other pics from last year are coming along well. Hope to see him get some games this year. Will need to play well with Hille the clear number on in the ruck and Allen to be no. 2. Troy Jardine

Somewhat of an unknown quantity. Has good potential and being a ruckman it will take a little time for him to realise his potential. Eamon Stafford

Seems to have the potential to play ruck or up forward and that versatility should stand him in good stead for a long career. Craig Moston

Looked really promising in the wizard cup, hopefully he stays fit this season and challenges Matthew Allen for ruck positions through the year. Dan Lennon

Hopefully Jason can develop into a more mature footballer in future years, and deliver what was promised when we picked him up in the 2003 draft. Admittedly, injuries slowed his progress a little. Samuel Wharton

Laycock has some of the best skill you could hope for in a player. Once he is given his chance, he will stamp his place in the Essendon line up. Hope to see you in 2004 Jason! Josh Little

Didn't get to see much of Jason but his pre season performances showed that he has skill to spare. Looks forward to a bright future if he continues to develop. Paul Bosher
