Contact between Essendon’s Sam Lonergan and Carlton’s Andrew Carazzo from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Carazzo was in pursuit of the ball and was tackled by Lonergan.
A free kick was paid at the time for a push in the back to the Carlton player. It was the view of the panel that both players were running at pace towards the ball and the momentum of the players took them to the ground when Lonergan laid a tackle.
The panel said there was no secondary driving or slinging action to take Carazzo into the turf as part of Lonergan’s attempt to tackle. A free kick was paid but the action was not deemed unreasonable in the circumstances and no further action was taken.
