A large proportion of young and talented footballers are still getting over the disappointment of not getting drafted at the 2003 National AFL Draft. Over 1000 players nominated for the draft and only 68 were selected. For some players this means returning to their former clubs and playing local footy, but for others there is still an opportunity to get selected by an AFL club. The forthcoming Rookie / Pre-season Draft means there is still hope for a number of potential AFL players to fulfil their dream of playing AFL footy.

Since the introduction of the Rookie system in early 1997, it has given clubs the chance to give young talent a crack at the big time - players that wouldn’t have otherwise got an opportunity at playing for an AFL club. Essendon has used its rookie list to full advantage over the years and a number of players have become regular senior players and even premiership players.

Over the next two days, we will track Essendon’s rookie history, see who has made it and who has gone missing in action.
