It was almost a mirror image of last week’s result at The Dome tonight. A poor first quarter cost Essendon the match. St Kilda sprinted out to a 26-point lead at the first change and forced the Bombers to play catch-up footy from then on. Essendon fought hard but couldn’t cover the loss of James Hird, Sean Wellman, Dustin Fletcher, Scott Lucas and Dean Rioli, who were all sidelined with injuries.
Essendon has suffered a massive blow on the eve of tonight’s must-win clash with St Kilda with both James Hird and Dustin Fletcher late withdrawals from the game. It was decided to give Hird another week to recover from a cracked rib while Fletcher is still suffering from the effects of having two teeth knocked out against West Coast. Jason Winderlich and Mark Mercuri both come into the side.
