Essendon full forward Matthew Lloyd fell just one goal short of a fourth Coleman Medal against the Western Bulldogs yesterday afternoon. Heading into the game Lloyd needed seven goals to tie St Kilda’s Fraser Gehrig for the award – he finished with six.

Lloyd came with a rush in the second half of the game after managing just one goal in the first half. Three goals in the third quarter put the goal put the goal within reach and another goal early in the last quarter had him within two goals.

His teammates did all they could in the final minutes of the game and Lloyd managed to kick one more goal, leaving him one short with about three minutes left on the clock. But the final siren brought his late charge to a halt and he had to be satisfied with 89 goals for the home and away season – one short of Gehrig’s 90.

""I appreciated the efforts of the guys. Sheeds spoke about it at three quarter time and made the guys aware of it but it wasn’t to be. More importantly it was good to win and we can now look forward to the finals,"" Lloyd said on Bomber Radio last night.

""From a personal point of view I was just pleased to return to some form because the past three weeks have been a bit quiet because of a shoulder injury. My shoulder felt great and that is good going into the finals. It was pleasing to kick six.""

Lloyd’s teammates did all they could in the final minutes to get him the goal he needed to tie for the award. Dean Solomon set up one goal and was desperate in his bid to get the ball to Lloyd on a couple of other occasions.

""Solly is really good and he always looks for me when he is coming down the ground. Hirdy also made an effort to get the ball to me. They are guys I have played football with for a long time and we love to see each other do well,"" Lloyd said of his teammates.

""It would always have been nice to kick that extra goal because when you look back on your career, four Coleman Medals sounds better than three. But football is about the team and hopefully we can have a big September.""
