It is hard to believe that Essendon selected six players in the 1990 National Draft before picking James Hird at selection 79. The club's decision to draft Hird could well be one of the best ever made in it's history. Hird is one of the most outstanding players to ever wear the red and black and has been a great captain since 1998. Just to name a few of his achievements, the 30-year-old has won four best and fairest awards in his time at Essendon, a Brownlow Medal and won two premierships.
