As part of phase 1 of the Essendon/AFL Multicultural program, nine schools headed to Windy Hill to participate in the Multicultural Cup. Played over three days throughout May, the competition saw schools play four games before settling in to watch the Grand Final battled out between the two teams with the most wins on the board.

The first day of the Multicultural Cup saw the Primary boys battle it out with great spirit. Despite dreary weather, the students made the most of the opportunity to demonstrate some of their best wet weather skills.

The heavy rain ensured the scores remained close throughout the day but after four games, it was Belle Vue Park and Pascoe Vale North that braced themselves to hit it out in the Grand Final.

Despite the unrelenting effort exhibited by a competitive Belle Vue Park unit, it was Pascoe Vale North that held on long enough to claim victory and accept the trophy from Essendon’s Richard Cole.

The second day of the Cup saw the Primary girls put their skills to the test at Windy Hill. Starting off a little timid, the girls took a bit longer to attack the ball with the same ferocity the boys had shown the game prior, but it didn’t take them long to let their hair down.

Slick handballs, classic grabs and blistering speed were displayed by all the girls, but no team could match the classy play of Brunswick East Primary who defeated Meadowfair North in the Grand Final to stand victorious at the end of the day.

Essendon Premiership player Adam Ramanauskas was impressed with the determination shown by all the girls and when presenting the trophy to Brunswick East, he recognised the fantastic effort and commitment everyone had shown on the day.

The final day of the Multicultural Cup involved Ilim College and Debney Park Seconday College. And considering AFL had been relatively foreign to both schools prior to the match, it was incredible to see the students giving it their all.

However the schools were not without assistance with Essendon players Andrew Welsh and Bachar Houli stepping in to coach the two sides.

Led by Houli, Ilim College were outstanding and were rewarded for their hard work with a 21-point victory.

The Best on Ground medal was awarded to Osman from Debney Park.
