This year marks eight years since the Essendon legend Michael Long’s historic trek from his home in Melbourne to Parliament House in Canberra to discuss Aboriginal issues with then Prime Minister, John Howard.

This inspirational event was seen as a mission for hope, a rallying call for a united Australia and vehicle of support for Aboriginal Culture.

Since the inaugural walk, annual celebrations have taken place and have continued to grown every year; and 2012 will be no exception.

This year’s annual Long Walk community celebration will kick off at 2pm at Birrarung Marr today and is set to be the biggest celebration to date.

The community celebration which pays tribute to Michael Long’s historic trek and honors Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, will carry on until the Long Walk to Dreamtime at the G’ at roughly 6pm.

Comedian Sean Choolburrra will MC the event, which will include live music from local Aboriginal performers, such as; acoustic soul singer Benny Walker, talented youngster Illana Atkinson and popular hip-hop outfit Yung Warrior who will launch their new album ‘Standing Strong’.

The free public event will also include a live edition of the popular Marngrook Footy show, featuring all your favorites from the TV show plus a few special guests.

In addition, human rights and democracy workshops and information stalls from; Amnesty International, Family Violence Prevention Legal Service, Reconciliation Victoria, and Victorian Aboriginal Health Service will all lend their services at Birrarung Marr.

There will be plenty activities to keep the kids entertained, as well as traditional basket weaving, painting and music workshops, the amazing Koorie Night Market, circus performers , and a great range of food stalls including Bush tucker.

Make sure you take part in this significant celebration and lend your support to the Long Walk which will continue provide programs and events to highlight Indigenous achievement and help improve Indigenous wellbeing.

Also supporting The Long Walk in 2012 is Create a Poster, this is an exciting new initiative which allows people to log onto the website at http://www.createaposter.com.au/ and customize their very own AFL poster.

Purchasing from Create a Poster should have consumers confident that products are official AFL licensed merchandise and a percentage of the sales go directly back to the player selected or the club they play for.
